Cloud computing offers high scalability, fast deployment and total flexibility. Many companies have experienced a transition into the cloud within the last 5 years - whether using public, private or hybrid cloud. Getting into the cloud is easy. However, many companies realized that maintenance costs of a private cloud are much higher than expected. The perceived lack of security of public clouds, on the other hand, makes people cautious. Which strategy is the best one for you?

Cloud - Quo Vadis?

Cloud computing is becoming increasingly attractive due to its quick and simple implementation. In recent years, the number of cloud-based solutions at our customer, a global player in the automotive industry, has exploded. However, clear strategic guidelines and documented best practices for future projects were still missing. For example, there was not enough transparency regarding security requirements or clear rules regarding the monitoring process. So, the first step was to come up with a solid cloud strategy.

Public Cloud First - fast and innovative.

Clear strategic guidelines are essential for a successful cloud transformation. The basis for these guidelines is, amongst others, a comprehensive market analysis. It is important to spot  the right trends and assess the current situation correctly. Using our knowledge of technology and how it is used at other clients, we were able to create a common understanding among the relevant stakeholders. Additionally, with the help of a "Big Picture" we were able visualize this. It addressed all central elements: physical infrastructure, technical platforms, application services and cloud orchestration. For each element the most important premises were defined based on the market research and agreed upon by senior management. These premises built the basis for a common vision of the cloud strategy and future development potential. The established guidelines enabled us to derive a new strategic direction - Public Cloud First. We complemented this strategy with a risk-optimized approach: to prioritize those applications that have the lowest security risk or the highest business benefit.

Customer Value

A clear strategy for the transition into cloud.

The new strategy: Public Cloud First, a bold decision. This was a decision based on well-founded analyst reports and our own hands-on experience in cloud implementation projects. It enabled future projects to design a long-term architecture. In addition to defining the strategic direction, we also identified the required cloud capabilities: the target operating model, cloud orchestration, and IT security. Only by building those capabilities can the full cloud potential be lifted and the risks managed. They also build the basis to prioritize the need for action, assign responsibilities and increase maturity. An ideal mix of central guidelines and autonomy for the DevOps teams enables the rapid development of innovative solutions. This pragmatic roadmap ensures a safe and efficient transition into cloud.
